Social networking tools planning meeting 09.02.07

General

Learning will be about tools emerging under the banner of social networking tools with a focus on story telling.
Think about ways of introducing wireless without compromising the web 2.0 session - perhaps show the wireless video and have Fatima chat about APC's wireless work.

Also need to think about how to factor in wireless - what are the options and opportunities

What the APC wants to get out of it -
A good - reusable - presentation on this topic

Analia to gather the resources and help Lauren plan the agenda (on the website!!)

Resource people:

  • Anriette
  • Sally
  • Fatima
  • Analia

Story Telling Session

Look at what Sally needs to do her session on digital story telling really well, and then work backwards.

  • Introduction: How stories have been developed and have a discussion around that
Discussion around the value of story telling - the significance of voice.
Should take a half day. Sally will demo Windows Movie Maker.
  • Practical part: People can work in pairs if there isn't 1 laptop per person.
If everyone has windows xp pro, then we can work with Windows Media Player in teams, to make some stories. People can use any pictures they have on their machines. No need to use voice - we can mix pictures and music. Sally can share her sound fx on a memory stick.
  • Screening: Set up viewing in a gallery format, and bring the whole group together to screen the WN stories

Web two dot zero Session

Home in on a few tools (2 or maximum 3), and unpack the issues in them, rather than covering too many different tools. Let the focus area (Using ICTs to elevate the voice of poor and marginalised people) inform the choice of tools

  • introduction to web 2.0 - Check out the C-Net video, O'reilly article, KN's article on wikis and a Wikipedia article.
    1. readers as active players in the information sharing game - i.e. no more readers and consumers. More potential for small voices to be published and heard.
  • blogging
    1. what is it and what is it good for?
    2. What's the difference between blogging and working with a CMS?
    3. Maybe Ori could come and do her presentation on women bloggers influencing policy through micro-activism
    4. Look for more local examples - eg sophia hueyar (sally to find URL)
    5. Demo some workshop and event blogs
  • tagging
    1. taxonomies, folksonomies, controlled language, tag clouds
  • photosharing
  • Encourage people to think about how they can work with these tools to support story-telling
  • Wikipedia - Look for some local content examples which can demonstrate how wikipedia can be a tool of an empowerment

Practicalities

Need to think about how to make the most of the Wedgewood Mews meeting room space. Clear out the desks to create a working-with-laptops space and a meeting-with-people space
Could ask people to come prepared with photos etc.. which can help tell the story.
Hire a laptop to have as a reserve
